A frequently applied heat treatment is the hardening of steel.
After hardening the product, the tempering process is started immediately, in which thermal tensions are reduced and the desired hardness is obtained. The result is a longer lasting component of the piece.

The processes performed by H&ST, are done in a vacuum, or air atmosphere while quenching is done in pressurised nitrogen or argon.
